Ingredients
Scale
Cupcakes
- 24 cupcakes, baked in cupcake liners
- 24 Reese’s miniature cups
Frosting
- 5 cups powdered sugar
- 5 tablespoons butter
- 5 tablespoons evaporated milk
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Red, blue, and green icing pens (or color your own homemade frosting)
Instructions
- Make the frosting: Combine powdered sugar, butter, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat on medium speed until the mixture is smooth and fluffy. Adjust the consistency by adding more powdered sugar if too thin or more evaporated milk if too thick.
- Divide the frosting: Place about 3/4 cup of the frosting into two small bowls separately for coloring. Reserve 1 1/2 cups of white frosting for the base decoration.
- Color the frosting: Add a few drops of red food coloring to one bowl and a few drops of green food coloring to the other bowl. Mix until you achieve the desired vibrant colors.
- Frost cupcakes: Use the white frosting to cover the tops of all 24 cupcakes evenly, creating a smooth base layer.
- Prepare piping bags: Transfer the red and green colored frostings into separate piping bags or ziplock bags with a small hole cut in the corner for easy decorating.
- Decorate cupcakes: Pipe ornament designs onto the white-frosted cupcakes using the red and green frostings to create festive patterns and details.
- Add topping: Place one Reese’s miniature cup inside each cupcake liner on top of the frosting to complete the ornament look. Optionally, twist a paper clip into a small fish hook shape and insert it into each Reese’s cup to mimic an ornament hook for added charm.
Notes
- If frosting is too runny, chill it for 10-15 minutes before decorating; if too stiff, add a bit more evaporated milk, 1 teaspoon at a time.
- Substitute Reese’s miniature cups with any small round candy or chocolate as desired.
- Use gel food coloring for more vibrant colors without altering frosting consistency.
- For easier piping, snip a small corner of the baggie to control the flow of frosting while decorating.
- These cupcakes can be made a day ahead and stored covered at room temperature to keep fresh.
