Description

Monte Cristo Stacks are a deliciously savory and sweet bite-sized twist on the classic sandwich, featuring layers of crispy russet potatoes, ham, Gruyere cheese, and a hint of garlic, baked to golden perfection and served with raspberry jam for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale

Potato Mixture

  • 1/8 sliced russet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced

Filling

  • 12 slices ham
  • 4 oz. grated Gruyere cheese, plus extra for topping
  • Parmesan cheese, for sprinkling
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, minced
  • Raspberry jam, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 400˚F and spray a muffin tin generously with cooking spray to prevent the stacks from sticking during baking.
  2. Mix Potatoes: In a large bowl, toss the sliced russet potatoes with melted butter, kosher salt, and minced garlic until all the slices are evenly coated.
  3. Assemble Layers: Begin layering 3 potato slices at the bottom of each muffin cup. Add a slice of ham on top, then a slice of Gruyere cheese, and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Repeat the layering once more ending with Gruyere cheese on top.
  4. Bake: Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake the stacks for 40 minutes or until they turn golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Remove and Garnish: Use a pairing knife to gently loosen each stack from the tin. Garnish the stacks with fresh minced parsley.
  6. Serve: Serve warm with generous dollops of raspberry jam on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Make sure the potato slices are thin and evenly coated in butter for uniform cooking and crispness.
  • Use a sharp pairing knife to carefully remove the stacks to keep them intact.
  • If Gruyere is unavailable, Swiss cheese can be a substitute.
  • The raspberry jam adds a lovely contrast, but you can try other fruit preserves like apricot or strawberry.
  • For extra crispiness, you can broil the stacks for 1-2 minutes at the end of baking but watch closely to avoid burning.
