Description

This Nutella Chocolate Flan is a decadent heart-shaped Valentine’s dessert combining smooth chocolate custard with rich Nutella and dark chocolate, topped with fresh berries and mint for an elegant finish. Perfect for a romantic celebration or special occasion dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Flan Mixture

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 12 ounce can evaporated milk (or milk of your choice)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup Nutella
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate for melting

Garnish

  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Pomegranate arils
  • Fresh mint leaves

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the flan.
  2. Melt Chocolate: In a medium saucepan, heat the evaporated milk, then add Nutella and dark chocolate. Stir continuously until the chocolate melts completely and is fully combined with the milk.
  3. Blend Mixture: Pour the warm chocolate milk mixture into a blender and blend for a few seconds until smooth and uniform in texture.
  4. Mix Custard: In a large bowl, beat the eggs. Gradually add the sweetened condensed milk, chocolate milk from the blender, and vanilla extract, mixing until the custard mixture is smooth and homogenous.
  5. Fill Molds: Pour the custard mixture evenly into individual molds or ramekins shaped as hearts for a festive presentation.
  6. Prepare Water Bath: Place the filled ramekins in a 2-quart square baking dish. Carefully pour boiling water into the dish around the ramekins to a depth of 1 inch, creating a bain-marie to ensure gentle baking.
  7. Bake Flan: Place the baking dish on the oven rack and bake for 45 minutes or until a knife inserted into the center of the flan comes out clean, indicating it is fully set.
  8. Cool Completely: Remove the ramekins from the oven and allow them to cool completely at room temperature before refrigerating. Chill for at least 45 minutes to firm up the flan.
  9. Unmold Flan: To unmold, remove the flan from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 10 minutes. Dip the ramekin briefly in hot water, tap the sides to loosen the custard, then invert onto a serving plate and gently shake until the flan slides out.
  10. Garnish and Serve: Top each flan with fresh strawberries, blueberries, pomegranate arils, and mint leaves before serving for a beautiful and delicious presentation.

Notes

  • To easily unmold the flan, warm the ramekin slightly in hot water and gently tap the sides to loosen the custard before inverting onto a plate.
  • If you do not have heart-shaped molds, regular ramekins work just as well.
  • You may substitute evaporated milk with almond milk or any milk of your choice, but this may slightly affect the texture.
  • Use dark chocolate with at least 60% cocoa content for a richer chocolate flavor.
  • Letting the flan rest and chill completely enhances its creamy texture and helps with easier unmolding.
